WHAT IS ASTAXANTHIN

In nature, more than 600 different red and yellow carotenoids exist. Astaxanthin belongs to the carotenoid family (which also includes beta-carotene, lutein, lycopene, zeaxanthin and xanthophylls). Astaxanthin is derived from the green microalga Haematococcus pluvialis.

The alga produces astaxanthin to protect itself from harmful external influences, such as sunlight. It is known that the alga can survive for forty years under extreme conditions, including without food or water and in exceptionally high or low temperatures. The alga owes this ability to its high concentration of astaxanthin.
