Rineke Dijkinga invested the proceeds from her books in 2.4 hectares of conventional farmland in Westerwolde, located next to a vast nature reserve in southeast Groningen. Here, an educational, non-profit project is starting, for farmers, bees, soil, and your plate.
What ends up on your plate largely determines how healthy you are and remain. Sustainable, vital, and varied food full of nutrients is the key to vitality and health. This kind of food can only come from healthy soil, clean water, and a healthy environment. While agriculture normally focuses on ‘yield per hectare,’ (H)eerlijk Westerwolds Land emphasises ‘health value per hectare’, a completely new concept in the Netherlands that we will surely hear much more about in the future.
Heerlijk Westerwolds Land is a pilot agroforestry project: a form of farming practiced in the past, with narrow strips of arable crops alternated with hedgerows and herbs to create a microclimate for birds, bees, insects, and other wildlife. This not only improves soil health but also provides a natural method of pest control. Even on a relatively small plot like Heerlijk Westerwolds Land, a wide variety of crops are grown on these narrow strips.
Biodiversity in nature means diversity on your plate. Together with local farmers, Van Hall Larenstein, and Wageningen University, Rineke is researching how to sustainably cultivate plant-based protein, omega-3 crops, and medicinal herbs that are healthy for both people and the environment. An educational project with an idealistic goal: to awaken the natural farmer within every person.
Just like with her products, Rineke shows through this project that it’s possible to take a different path. Fertile land is the first requirement because what isn’t in the soil doesn’t end up in our food, with corresponding consequences for the energy and health of plants, animals, and people. With living soil, food naturally becomes more nutritious again. This philosophy is embraced by all our organic farmers in their pursuit of products with 100% nutritional value, nothing else.
