How to colour with
henna powder

More and more people want to colour their hair naturally. With Hennaplus Colour Powder, you’re guaranteed a 100% natural product. Our henna powder is pure, with no synthetic additives. When you colour your hair with henna, you’ll be amazed by the beautiful, shiny effect it has on your hair. Besides colouring, it strengthens your hair, giving it extra body, volume, and resilience. Colour Powder is also the best choice if you have a sensitive scalp or fine, lifeless hair.

What is henna?

Henna is a plant. Lawsonia inermis is the plant whose leaves are dried and ground into powder. This plant powder contains red colour molecules. Our Hennaplus powders are made from powders of several plants. This allows us to offer a colour range of 7 natural shades. The plants we use alongside the henna bush in these blends are:

  • Coffea canephora, a coffee plant

  • Indigofera tinctoria, part of the pea family, grown for the indigo dye

  • Cassia angustifolia, another pea-family plant

Colour Powder Golden Blond contains, besides tartaric acid, Emblica officinalis (amla): only the berries of this subtropical deciduous tree are used in this Colour Powder. All colour powders we use in the blends are organically grown.

Why choose Colour Powder henna powders?

  • Beautiful, intense colour results with maximum shine

  • Organic hair colouring

  • Adds extra body, volume, and strength to hair

  • Lasts about 3 months

  • No visible roots and fades gradually

  • Perfect for sensitive scalps or colouring fine and/or lifeless hair

  • Free from synthetic additives (such as P-Phenylenediamine - PPD)

  • Contains no metal salts, so hair can always be coloured later with products like Hennaplus Long Lasting Colour (permanent hair dyes) after using our henna powders

Note: Henna powders (in general) should never be used on bleached hair. Hair coloured with powder cannot be bleached afterwards either, as this can result in an ‘orange-red’ effect.

STEP BY STEP

Preparation
Wash and comb your hair well beforehand to avoid tangles while colouring. The Colour Powder packaging includes a handy brush and a pair of plastic gloves. The gloves are essential because henna colouring stains your hands. Wear an old shirt and cover your shoulders with a dark towel. To avoid stains on your skin along the hairline, apply Calendula Hand & Body Balm or Skinwonder Cream on your neck, around your ears, and forehead beforehand.

If you’re colouring your hair yourself, it’s helpful to secure your hair with clips so you can easily keep sections aside while colouring.

Step 1
Mix the henna powder with boiling water until you get a creamy paste. Make sure there are no lumps. If you’ve never coloured your hair with henna before, the smell might take some getting used to. There is no ammonia, so there are no chemical smells.

For different effects, you can add other ingredients instead of water:

  • Vinegar for extra shine

  • Lemon juice for a lighter, brighter colour

  • Espresso if you want a darker tone

  • Red cabbage juice for a purple tint

  • Red wine for a dark red twist

For grey hair: Hennaplus Colour Powder is suitable for hair with less than 20% grey. For grey hairs, you can make a mix: 50% Colour Powder Hazelnut + 50% Colour Powder Dark Brown with boiling water or coffee for a chestnut brown tint. The processing time is about 30 minutes. You can also mix with Hennaplus Colour Cream. Mix dark hair with Hennaplus Colour Cream Brown for less red tones. The mixture stays smoother when combined with Colour Cream.

Step 2
Start colouring by securing the top sections with clips. Begin at the nape and work your way up, section by section. Apply the mixture along the entire length of your hair. Make sure to apply the mixture as hot as possible. You can add boiling water to the paste during application or keep your bowl warm using a bain-marie. Wrap your hair in cling film after applying the colour, and wrap a warm (dark) towel around your head to retain heat.

Step 3
Relax while the colour sets on the outer layer of your hair. Processing time depends on your natural hair colour and can range from 5 to 90 minutes. Always do a strand test first.

Step 4
Rinse out the henna. As you’ve noticed, the dye is mud-coloured and stains, so be careful while rinsing. It’s best to rinse over a kitchen sink to avoid stains in the bathroom. Then wash your hair with a mild shampoo to remove all the henna paste thoroughly.

Enjoy your new hair colour and beautifully nourished locks!
