Quality Differences in Keratin

There are around 50 different types of keratin or keratin-like substances permitted in cosmetic products. However, the most common and widely used form in hair care products is hydrolysed keratin. Hydrolysed keratin is an artificially broken-down form of keratin, where large keratin protein molecules are split into smaller fragments. This makes the keratin easier for the hair to absorb. However, this cheaper form of keratin lacks important amino acids, meaning its hair-strengthening effect is minimal. Other forms of keratin that can be used include plant-based keratin, keratin of animal origin, or keratin derived from sheep’s wool.
